Smart challenge is a mobile application development competition sponsored by TNM aimed at inspiring and growing local mobile app and website development in Malawi. Participants will undergo workshops facilitated by experts from partner companies (Facebook, IBM, Opera Mini and M-hub) that will nurture them in business development skills, technology solution training, product development and will have an opportunity to receive mentorship and engage with various experts from the industry.

In order to be eligible for the smart challenge first and foremost you have to be a Malawian citizen and thereafter depending on category that you qualify; you will choose from the 3 smart challenge categories.

The three Smart challenge categories are Smart kid, Smart student and Smart community.

Entry into the TNM Smart Kid competition is restricted to children between 5-12 years of age. Participants will be allowed to get assistance from their parents/guardians to register and make a submission online. Children will be required to have parental consent to participate in the competition. Proof of parental consent will also be required before collection of reward.

You will play USSD based games on *575# and you will be assigned scores based on your performance. The participant with the highest score at the end of the month will win Haus P7 Tablet. You will be required to submit their scores online and only participants whose scores have been submitted will be eligible. Incorrect submission of scores will lead to automatic disqualification.

If you wish to register for the application development category you will be required to submit your application through the portal for the challenge including a short video presentation explaining the rationale behind the application. The public will vote for the top 5 applications and a panel of professional judges will select the final winner at the end of the competition.

The final winner will get an IPAD Mini 2 and a sponsored trip to Silicon Valley to visit Facebook, Google, Apple, Opera Software and Stanford University.

Participation in the TNM Smart Student competition will be limited to students at schools in Malawi – be it primary, secondary or tertiary level. Participants will be required to provide evidence of their school affiliation. Students will be required to provide the following details; School Name, Student ID, and Age during registration. For the finalists, schools will be involved in the student verification process. Participants will be required to enter the competition as a team of not more than 3 students. The members of the group may be from the same school or from different schools.

Participants will be required to submit a video recording of a presentation of their business idea behind their application and the public will vote for the best application . The top 5 apps or websites with the highest number of votes will be reviewed by a panel of judges at the end of the competition who will select the final winner.

Participation in the Smart Community challenge category will be open to accredited colleges and technology hubs in Malawi. This category is aimed at identifying and supporting serious application developer communities capable of offering solutions through the mobile ICT industry. These communities will be expected to encourage team work in application development and skill set distribution. Contestants will be required to submit a video recording of a presentation of the best apps - at most 5 of them– that have been developed within their community. The public will vote for best app development community and the community with the highest number of votes will win.

Four computers to be used for their computer laboratory to be branded as TNM Innovation lab.

The Challenge commences at 00:00 hours on Monday 1st October 2015 and registration will close at 23:59 hours on 30th November 2015. All entries must be received by 23.59 hours on Monday 30th November 2015.

The public will vote for the best application as well as the best application development community through the competition portal and SMS short code 575 by sending the name of their chosen team or community.

  1. Teams and individuals successful in Stage 1 will be invited to participate in the special incubation phase of the Challenge. During this phase the successful groups would be nurtured in business development skills, technology solutions training, product development and will have an opportunity to receive mentorship and also engage with various experts from the industry.
  2. These groups will be notified by phone or email between 1st January 2016 and 8th January 2016. The final incubation sessions will be held at TNM Head Office, Living Towers, Blantyre or such other venue as may be communicated by TNM to the qualifying teams and individuals.
